A LIFE IN DESIGN

A designer is only as good as their last piece of work, and so I strive to create the best possible solution on a new project. I possess an exceptional eye for detail, honed during twenty five years of experience with international digital agencies large and small.

I have designed B2B and B2C websites, brand experience micro-sites and online advertising campaigns, as well as large e-commerce sites and touchscreen kiosks. In recent freelance positions I have been responsible for creating and maintaining Figma design systems for clients such as Legal & General, Lloyds Of London and WTW.

So far I have worked remotely and on-site in London, Brighton, Brussels, Mexico City and Barcelona.

APPROACH

At the start of a project I assess and audit any existing UI assets, toolkit or design system. I like to absorb brand guidelines in preparation for refining these assets or creating them from scratch. I am comfortable working with a design system, or building my own from the bottom up, including thorough documentation.

Layouts for websites can begin with sketches or mid-fidelity Figma designs, depending on timescale and client. The sooner a basic toolkit is built, the better the wireframes and prototypes look. The polish is not applied only at the end, but is an ongoing process of refinement. Consistency in design inspires confidence in both client and user.

Upon the termination of a project contract I always deliver the kind of handover, of both design files and project briefing, that I would like to receive as an incoming designer.

UX AND RESEARCH

Lately I have been part of design teams researching UX and testing prototypes and concepts with stakeholders and users. I enjoy this side of the work, being naturally inquisitive and keen to make products that function efficiently.

The feedback from user workshops and testing sessions is invaluable. In recent years I have been developing this side of my working practise.

VISUAL DESIGN

Good design should be felt as well as seen. The layman may not be able to express in words why one piece of digital design or communication is richer in quality than another, but they instinctively know it when they see it.

This feeling in the end user is ultimately what I aim for. That is the craft.
